Colour in Interior Design

colour-in-interior-designDespite the fact that colour is an everyday part of our lives and that it surrounds us wherever we are, having an eye for what works and what doesn’t, Colour in interior design however, is an essential and important element of interior design, and not purely from an aesthetic point of view.

The impact of colour on the human psyche and its ability to affect our moods is something which is very well documented.  Green, for example, is the colour of nature and as such is typically experienced as calm and restful, whereas red is stimulating and certain shades of blue are often seen as cold.  Orange, meanwhile, is an energetic colour, although when it veers towards earthier shades such as terracotta, it becomes more warming and relaxing.  With so many different tones and shades of the same colours though, making sense of what would work where can be tricky.

Another problem that many people experience with colour, of course, is what goes with what.  as with fashion, if colours don’t coordinate or contrast within the home, not only is it impossible to create a feel of luxury and elegance, but the jarring effect literally assaults the senses.

Leaving aside the psychological effects of colour, another reason why getting colour schemes right in a home is so important is because the tones and the shades which are chosen can have an enormous impact on the perception of the size of a room.  The same room in two identical houses will appear to be of completely different proportions if they are decorated in different colours, and the extent to which this is true is often quite staggering.

When considering the use of colour in interior design, it is also important to think in terms of practicality.  A household in which there are young children or pets, for example, is often well-advised to steer clear of upholstery fabric in light shades such as cream or white.

However, not only should all of the practical aspects of your lifestyle be taken into account in the design scheme which is proposed, but of course the aesthetic ones too.

Lighting in Interior Design

interior-design-lightingLighting is one of the most overlooked and yet important elements of good interior design  After all, there is little point in  creating luxury surroundings if they cannot then be appreciated properly or if there is insufficient light to be able to carry out even the most basic of tasks.  In addition though, lighting is also essential in terms of creating the mood and ambience of a living space, so getting it right from the start is vital.

When thinking about lighting, it tends to be artificial light that comes to mind. optimising the use of natural light, however, is also key, both in terms of practicality and in order to be able to appreciate the beauty of the space.  When creating an interior design scheme from scratch taking both artificial and natural lighting into consideration, but even within an existing design there is still much that we can do to improve matters.

Where artificial lighting is concerned, there are of course a number of different types.  Accent lighting, for example, can be extremely effective when used to display paintings or to accentuate plants or objets d’art, although the angle of the lighting clearly needs to be just right to achieve the very best effect.  Task lighting is another type of lighting which is important in just about every room of a house.  In sitting rooms and studies, for example, it helps to avoid eyestrain when reading or working, while in the kitchen it ensures that tasks can be carried out safely.  Adequate task lighting is also essential in the bathroom for the purposes of shaving or applying make-up for instance.

interior-design-lightingMood lighting uses different tones and colours of light, as well as different levels of brightness, with the aim of creating atmosphere in a room.  In many cases it uses soft, warm lights to induce a feeling of calm and relaxation, but at the opposite end of the spectrum it can also be used to provide a lively and invigorating effect.

Of course, getting the lighting right in a luxury design scheme isn’t just about where lights are placed or how strong or bright they are.  The light fittings and lamps themselves are an element of the overall design and, when chosen to fit perfectly with the style of the room, they have the potential to give life to the space.

Contemporary Interior Design

we believe that the art of  contemporary interior design lies not only in forward-thinking, creative and innovative design concepts, but also in achieving the very highest standards in terms of quality. Our stylish, sophisticated and luxurious contemporary design schemes make use of only the best materials and suppliers, which are used to create unique and highly individualised residential and commercial spaces.

Because contemporary interior design is about clean lines and in some cases involves a more minimalist and uncluttered feel than more traditional schemes, every single design element not only counts, but in many ways the impact of its presence is magnified.  What this means, in essence, is that to create a contemporary look which speaks of luxury and sophistication, every element which is used in the finished design needs to be of exceptional quality, because anything which is inferior will stand out in such a way as to spoil the overall effect.  For this reason, we not only focus on sourcing the very best quality materials and items, but also design elements which are unusual or unique and which will give your home or commercial space a totally individual look.

One of the key aspects is the optimal and innovative use of both space and materials.  When we meet with our clients at their homes or commercial premises for the first time, therefore, one of our first priorities is to establish both their practical and aesthetic considerations.  In addition, it is one of the hallmarks of our business to positively encourage our clients to describe their own ideas so that these can be developed and incorporated into the final design.  Although this is something that we do in relation to every project that we work on, what we often find with clients who are interested in creating a contemporary environment in particular is that they have one or two truly excellent design ideas that they wish to use as a starting point, and it is always our aim to ensure that these form the basis of the scheme that we create.

Once we have established the basic criteria that we need to work to in relation to your contemporary interior design project, we then produce the concept design for your approval, as well as an estimate of the costs involved.  From here, we handle every aspect of the project through to final execution, all the time ensuring that you are involved and informed in the process of developing your own commercial or residential space.  The projects that we undertake vary in size and range from sourcing and supply to full-scale residential or commercial projects which require a high level of creativity and innovation.

Creating Beautiful Home Interiors

home-interiorsAchieving the right balance between style, comfort and practicality is an essential part of creating beautiful and yet functional home interiors.  After all, we might want our homes to look like ‘show homes’, but we certainly don’t want them to feel cold and impersonal or for them to be unusable, any more than we want them to reflect anything other than our own personal styles and tastes.

Designing a personal space, therefore, clearly has to take into consideration more than just colour schemes, textures and fabrics.  First and foremost, it needs to deal with your lifestyle and how you use your home.

Perhaps to a far greater extent than ever before, today’s homes are often multi-functional spaces.  Not only are they the havens that we retreat to at the end of each day, but they are the places where we bring up our children and where we entertain our friends, families and business associates.  Increasingly though, they are also the places where we work.

How each room is used and by whom, therefore, is integral to its design, which is why we at Sara Anton Interiors go to great pains to truly understand the practical concerns of our clients, as well as paying close attention to developing their own ideas in terms of aesthetics.

Family home interiors typically create some of the greatest challenges for many home owners, as often there is the feeling that their own personal styles and tastes need to be suppressed entirely in order to create an environment which is both safe and practical for children.  Safety and practicality, however, can be perfectly well combined with a look of stylish sophistication, luxury and elegance with the help of the right interior designer.

At Sara Anton Interior Designers our approach to designing home interiors begins with an on-site meeting home-interior-designduring which our clients’ needs and wishes are discussed and evaluated, including of course any practical considerations which might be relevant to the project.  Further to this meeting, an initial scheme is created for the client’s consideration, which may include mood boards and scaled floor plans, along with an itemised estimate depending upon the size and scale of the project.  This proposal may then be presented to the client during a second visit and, once the outline has been approved, this forms the basis of further discussions from which the project can build towards its completion.
